Model Transport Case
Just came across a couple of photos of one of a series of transport cases I made a few years ago. This particular case was designed to carry a 1:48n3 Kodama K-27. Unfortunately the image quality is less than ideal. These are scans of prints made from 35mm transparencies, however you should get the general idea.

Case closed, ready to travel.
This case is a predominantly figured Maple with Purple Heart trim and inner cradle. Each panel in the case is made from 1/2″ T. Birch plywood edged with 1/2″ solid maple. Each panel was then veneered with the figured Maple taking care to match veneer across the opening edges on each panel. Each panel was mitred on its joining edges and assembled with biscuit joints to strengthen the construction. Hidden brass hinges and a ball catch were used for the lid. The opening edges were trimmed with a thin strip of Purple Heart. The picture below shows the box open with the locomotive cradle in the foreground.

Transport case components.
The cradle was made from three Purple Heart panels. The floor has two grooves (just visible in the above photo) into which the wheels of the locomotive sit. Each side panel is hinged and lined on the inside surface with acid-free finger foam. The side panels have three finger holes in the top center to make for easy lifting (again just visible in the above photo). With the model in place in the grooves, the sides are folded up cushioning the model. The cradle is then placed inside the box. A thin layer of foam covers the floor of the box. Foam inside the lid of the box cushions the model from above when the box is closed. Rubber feet on the bottom complete the case. The case was finished with hand-rubbed oil finish followed by several buffed coats of Butcher’s Wax.
Each of these cases is custom-made to suit a particular model. If you would like one for one of your prized models, drop me a line with the overall dimensions of your model and any particular wood preferences. I’ll be happy to quote you a price.
